SEPTA's D40LFs with the Detroit Diesel engines do not deserve to get replace. F thoese Xcelsior

Dash5155

5616, 5635, 5642, 5656, 5667, 5692, 5762, and 5769 were recently put to rest.

Sadly this marks the beginning of the end of the 2004 buses now, however they weren't actually seen at the scrap yard so it's possible the 57xx were simply put on light duty.

Dash5155

5632, 5636, and 5661 all retired. I seen these buses with my own eyes. For those that follow the TrAcSe videos, I will actually be showing two of these buses on Tuesday's video with their fareboxes removed.

According to the group, 5618, 5641, and 5664 were also retired. This I did not see, but wow. I am going to try my best to get as many rides on the 2003 batch as possible now because their days are VERY limited.

To give you an idea as to what's left of the 2003 batch, that's:

5613, 5623, 5630, 5637, 5640, 5645-5646, 5663, 5668, 5678, 5679, 5682-5684. 5689. 5691, 5695-5697, 5699, 5703, 5708-5711

or 24 buses out of the original fleet of 100.

Soon this sound will be a thing of the past:

Dash5155

5617, 5638, and 5766 are the latest additions to the sadness pie. Apparently the 2004 buses are going as well. Yikes.

MillerRichard1

IF only SEPTA kept at least a few of these around :( I have nothing against the Xcelsiors but damn.. I grew up around SEPTA buses like the NABIs, Neoplans, El Dorados and obviously the D40LFs and now it's like my childhood buses are all going away. We already lost the NABIs, Neoplans and El Dorados as is :'(

Dash5155

While they are still not in revenue service, 5632 has been reassigned to Victory, and 5636 has been reassigned to Frontier.

This gives merit to the idea that this year's holiday buses will be the 56xx series buses, as 5682 was re-assigned to Allegheny.  None of these three depots have any other 56xx buses so it makes sense.

Dash5155

So the theory about the remaining 56xx being used as Christmas buses has officially come to pass, as a (trustworthy) operator had stated they attempted to use one of the moved buses and was told they cannot due to this.

With that being said, now more 2004s are being retired. 5718, 5756, and 5849H were removed from the roster over the course of the past week.

Dash5155

And the retirements start up yet again,

5695 and 5745 have gone to the big bus depot in the sky...

Dash5155

More 2004 D40LFs are down for the count. Latest additions to the list are 5796, 5806 and 5820.

Dash5155

So there's a rumor circulating that 5689 and 5703 is retired. This was mentioned by reliable sources but I will not add them to the list until it's official.

The more that retire... the more saddened I become RIP SEPTA's New Flyer D/DE40LFs

Well I recieved confirmation that those two are actually gone. RIP.

Here's the current ACTIVE 2003 D40LFs still on the roster (ACTIVE being the key word here, since the rest are holiday buses, likely to be retired after Christmas)

Comly: 5623
Midvale: 5678, 5679, 5683, 5691, 5696, 5697, 5699, 5708, 5709, 5710, 5711
Frankford: 5630, 5640, 5645, 5646

So I guess now is the time to get your pictures in. If not, then deff go check out the holiday buses when they come to be as they will be the last horrah for the 2003 buses. Then only the 2004s will remain....

Dash5155

5697 and 5711 was added to the list of death. Yikes.

Dash5155

Here's a long list of fresh retirees:

5678, 5683, 5699, 5708, 5709, 5740, 5746, 5751, and 5861

There are presently only TEN 2003 D40LFs in service.

Dash5155

Welcome to 2020. 5640, 5710, 5726, and 5861 are the first write-offs of the decade. Way to bring in the new year, RIP

Dash5155

5691, 5696, and 5723 were added to the list.

That means Midvale only has 5708
Frankford only has 5630, 5645 and 5646

The rest haven't been seen in service for quite some time (or were the holiday buses and just haven't been written off yet)

Dash5155

5623 was added to the list, I forgot this was a Christmas bus. By that matter, so was 5684.

Potentially, 5942 could be a write-off as well due to a recent fire that caused actual frame damage.

I'm compiling a tribute video to the 2003 D40LFs soon. We started 2019 with a whole bundle of 2002 D40LFs (5 to be exact, but the number dwindled down to 4 by summertime) and the 2003s were all still intact (with the exception of 5705 which retired early due to fire). Now in January 2020, All the 2002s are gone, There's only three 2003s left, and some 2004s have already left the door. It's getting grim...

Jonathan the great

Let me guess, the 2008 D40LF are going to retire to. Just retire every D40 or DE40LF you have SEPTA. Keep one of them as a holiday bus. That will make me happy

Well the 2005s/2006s that are gone retired prematurely. Otherwise, those aren't due to retire until at least 2022.

Once those go, then it would be about 2 years until the 2008 DE40LFs go.... so they're probably going to stick around until at least 2025 at this rate.

Jonathan the great

Oh good. I still got a chance to ride them. I may come ride SEPTA\s  DE40LFs as there's only one DE40LF in Seattle that is running and it;s really hard to find what route it's running on. I may come there for the old buses if any are still around

I would say come for the D40LF's first, they're dropping like flies.

As we speak, 5720 and 5789 were marked off. With 5942 being towed to Midvale's scrap yard.

Dash5155

Since I last updated this list, a lot has changed.

5716, 5728, 5729, 5761, 5768, 5773, 5776, 5777, 5810 and 5927 have been retired

5630, 5645, and 5646 have been re-assigned to Southern Depot instead of retired.

I am usually pretty busy so if anyone has anything to contribute to the list, feel free to post your updates here as well.
