SEPTA Metro L Lines
The SEPTA Metro L Lines are named as such because they operate via the Market-Frankford Subway/Elevated. Since many locals refered to this line as the “El”, it was only appropriate to name them as such, with the letter L.
The numbers assigned to the SEPTA Metro L lines are based on their service level. This is one of the only two SEPTA Metro Lines that only have one service level.
- L1 local service, making all stops service between Frankford Transit Center and 69th Street Transit Center

Overnight Service
Since June 16th 1991, overnight service on the SEPTA Metro L Lines has been provided by bus. Between the hours of 12:30am and 5:00 am, trains do not operate, and instead buses operate via Frankford Avenue, Kensington Avenue, Front Street, and Market Street with signs designating it as L1 Owl service, and making stops at all L1 stops. At 15th St/City Hall Station, buses are coordinated with the B1 Owl bus service, operating every 15 minutes.
