Route 89 Origins
The latest iteration of SEPTA Route 89 was a combiniation of three bus lines. The original 89 was just a crosstown line via Tioga and Venango Streets until May 16th 1993, when these three lines merged into the most recent 89.
- Route P operating between Arrott Terminal and Kensington-Allegheny via Wingohocking Street, M Street, Lycoming Street, and G Street.
- Route 57 operating crosstown service via Jefferson/Master Streets to 29th Street
- Route 89 operating from 2nd-Erie to Venago-Belfore via Tioga and Venango Streets.
Route P via Wingohocking and M Streets, 1941-1993

Route P was established on June 15th 1941, creating a connection from Kensington-Allegheny Market-Frankford Line Station to Juniata Park via G Street, Lycoming Avenue, M Street, and Wingohocking Street, terminating at Arrott Terminal (now Arrott Transit Center). For a while, this would be the only bus service through Juniata Park. This line would run virtually unmodified until it was ultimately discontinued on May 16th 1993, and merged into route 89.
Route 89 Crosstown Origins 1948-1993

Route 89 was established in 1948, with the simple goal of connecting riders along Tioga Street and Venango Street to Tioga Station on the Market-Frankford Line. This line operated from 2nd-Erie, via 2nd Street to Tioga Street, then via Tioga Street to Kensington Avenue, to Venango Street, then via Venango Street to Balfour Street. Route 89 would be the first bus route to serve Port Richmond as beforehand, Port Richmond would only be served by trolley routes 5, 15, 54, and 60. This verison of route 89 would run virtually unmodified until May 16th, 1993.

Route 89 via Juniata Park
On May 16th, 1993, route 89 would absorb the crosstown from service on route 57, as well as service on now-discontinued bus route P, to form what we know as the “modern” route 89. This route operated from Arrott Terminal (now Arrott Transit Center) to 29th-Master via Wingohocking Street, M Street, Hunting Park Avenue, G Street, Erie Avenue, B Street, Tioga Street, Kensington Avenue, Venango Street, Arimingo Avenue, York Street, American Street, and Master Street (Jefferson Westbound).
On September 8th, 1996, service on route 89 would be cutback from Master/Jefferson Streets, and only operate as far as American Street (still alowing a transfer to bus route 57). Which was the last point where any transit line would serve Master/Jefferson Street.
One final change would come on September 6th 2009, where Route 89 would be taken off of Venango Street between Frankford and Arimingo Avenues, and instead operate via Butler Street to serve the then-new Arimingo Crossing Shopping Center on that stretch. This would be the final change on route 89 before service would be discontinued for good on August 23rd, 2026.
Other Routes using the same numbers.
SEPTA Bus route 89 was the only iteration of route 89 in the system. No other bus routes would’ve been assigned that number.
New Bus Network Changes
SEPTA Route 89 was discontinued on August 23rd 2026. In its places, SEPTA bus routes 25 and 53 were re-routed to cover some portions, and bus route 76 was created, covering the former route P portion via F/G Streets.
