Route J history

Route 41 was originally bus route J which was created on October 30th 1938, operating from Wisshahickon Av & Rittenhouse St (Germantown) to Arrott Terminal. While the routing stayed generally the same throughout it’s existence, there were some notable changes.

On September 13, 1954, a rush hour only western extension of route J was added via School House Lane to Warden Drive and Vaux.

On September 3rd 1961, the western terminus of the route was changed from Wissahickon Avenue & Rittenhouse Street to Chelten Avenue & Wissahickon Avenue, and the routing was changed to operate via School House Lane and Pulaski Avenue, instead of Rittenhouse Street and Pulaski Avenue.

Route 75 trackless trolley service was cutback to Arrott Terminal on April 3rd 1966, and route J was extended via Orthodox/Margaret Streets to Richmond & Orthodox Streets. Owl service was added to route J at this time as well, operating between Frankford Terminal and Richmond-Orthodox between the hours of 2am and 6am

Later that year on September 6th 1966 additional owl service on route J would be added as route 73/J/R combination trips as route R to Frankford Terminal, route J to Richmond-Orthodox, and route 73 to Richmond-Westmoreland. This additional owl service would be re-structured on June 19th 1983 to operate as route R to Frankford Terminal then route 73 to Richmond-Westmoreland as route 73/R combination trips and designated as route R, but regular owl service on route J would remain, and service would continue to operate from Frankford Terminal to Richmond-Westmoreland between the hours of 2am and 6am.

The limited rush hour only extension of route J via School House lane would be discontinued on June 11th 1989.

Owl service on route J operating from Frankford Terminal to Richmond-Westmoreland between the hours of 2am and 6am would be silently removed on February 13th 2011.

Route J would be re-designated as route 41 on February 23rd 2025 as part of SEPTA’s New Bus Network.
