Most routes that connected to route 35 also serve Wissahickon Transit Center, so that would be the ideal transfer point for this route.

SEPTA Route 35 History

Route 35 was one of the original bus routes, originating as route Z in 1931.

Route Z was created on December 13th 1931 as a bus route operating from Main Street & Green Lane to Ridge Avenue & Main Street (current location of Wissahickon Transit Center). This route operated (from Main & Green Lane) via Cresson St to Silverwood Street, then up to Leverington Street, across to Ridge Avenue, down to Lyceum Avenue, back over to Manayunk Avenue, down to Ridge Avenue, taking Ridge Avenue down to Main St & Ridge Avenue loop (current site of Wissahickon Transit Center). This bus route was meant to replace discontinued trolley service in the area.

On February 1st 1942, route Z would be extended in both directions. To the south, it was extended via Ridge Avenue, Midvale Avenue, Henry Avenue, Abbotsford Avenue, Wissahickon Avenue and Erie Avenue to Broad Street & Erie Avenue, froming a connection with the SEPTA Metro B Lines at Erie Station. To the north, the line would be extended to Ridge & Fountain Avenues.

On June 18th 1961, route Z would be return to terminating at Ridge Avenue & Main Street to the south. Two years later on April 14th 1963, route Z would be operate in a loop through Manayunk and Roxborough, starting at Ridge Avenue and Fountain Street, operating via Ridge Avenue to Roxborough Avenue, up Manayunk Avenue, to Leverington Avenue, back down Silverwood Street to Rector Street, up Cresson Street to Green Lane, then Main Street up to Leverington Avenue, over to Umbria, taking that up to Fountain Street, and terminating at Ridge Avenue & Fountain Street.

This would remain the route for the next few decades.

Route Z would be officially designated route 35 on October 8th, 1967.

The first change route 35 would get would be on June 7, 1998, where route 35 would be sent via Main Street over to Wissahickon Transfer Center (now Wissahickon Transit Center). Route 35 would stop operating in a loop, between September 1st 2002 and November 12th 2006, as it would instead operate between Wissahickon Transit Center and Andorra, replacing service on route 9 that was removed during the same period. Route 35 would return to being the Manayunk-Roxborough Loop on November 12th 2006, and route 9 would be extended back to Andorra.

The final change on route 35 would come on June 19, 2011, as on this date a lot of the tighter turns were removed from route 35, and it was sent via Main Street to Wissahickon Transit Center so that larger buses could operate on the route. Route 35 was also moved north to Domino Lane (from Fountain Street) to cover the ground that was previously lost from route 61 losing Ridge-Summit service on the same date.

Route 35 would be discontinued on August 23rd 2026, with no direct replacement.
