Route 1 History
SEPTA Route 1 Started off as the Boulevard Limited service on November 18th 1957, running limited stop weekday service along Roosevelt Boulevard between Pennypack Circle and 23rd-Venango.
The first extension would be on September 3rd 1963, with the line being extended west via the Boulevard Extension and City Avenue to 54th Street.
The route was re-numbered to route 1 on September 12th, 1988, and a limited extension to 69th Street Transit Center (then called 69th Street Terminal) to the west would be added on the same date. Service on route 1 would also be slightly modified to serve Wissahickon Transit Center by request.
The route would also be extended to Red Lion and Academy Roads to the east. All limited service north of Harbison Avenue would become local all-stops service starting January 23rd 1989
This route was diverted to operate via Allegheny Avenue and Ridge Avenue to Wissahickon Transit Center and then via City Avenue instead of operating via the Boulevard extension to City Avenue, starting March 5th 1990
The limited extension to 69th Street Transit Center was discontinued on September 9th 1996.
The line would be extended north to Byberry East Industrial Park September 13th 1999.
Saturday service was introduced on February 23rd, 2004.
Service was extended north yet again to Philadelphia Park (Now Parx) Casino to the east on February 12th, 2007, alongside the creation of routes 50 and 150. This would become the way route 1 operates until February 2027. As with the New Bus network Phase 2, route 1 would be discontinued in favor of the Boulevard Direct being extended south into Wissahickon Transit Center.
Other Routes using the same numbers
Historically, there was no other bus routes that used number 1 externally. However, internally, the Market-Frankford Line was referred to as route 1.
New Bus Network Changes
Service on route 1 will be discontinued in February 2027 in favor of Boulevard Direct service.
