After years of being operated and maintained by Alstom (previously Bombardier Transportation), NJ Transit now directly owns, operates, and maintains the River LINE.
The goal is to transition full operation of the River LINE over to NJ Transit from Alstom by the end of the year.
“NJ TRANSIT and Alstom are committed to providing safe and reliable service for our customers on the River LINE. After several years of working closely together to assess the conditions of the River LINE, NJ TRANSIT and Alstom today announced that responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the line will begin to transition to NJ TRANSIT on 9/3/25. NJ TRANSIT will assume all responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the River LINE by the end of this year.” – NJ Transit
When the River LINE was being built back in 1999-2004, it was maintained by Southern New Jersey Rail Group, a joint effort between South Jersey, Bombardier Transportation and Bechtel, until the line was in full operation in 2004. From that point onwards, Bombardier Transportation Assumed all operation of system. In 2021, when Bombardier folded to Alstom, Alstom took over all operations until now.
With this takeover, NJ Transit can now directly ensure that all issues with the fleet and service can be addressed quicker.
